Outreach - South Oakland Shelter
South Oakland Shelter
The South Oakland Shelter organization provides shelter, food, and
counsel to some of the homeless in south Oakland county.

The mission of the South Oakland Shelter is to provide emergency
shelter to those in need and work to remove them from the cycle of
homelessness.  We are proud to be a charter member of this
organization.

2007 South Oakland Shelter Report
"I give you a new commandment..."
Jesus commissioned his disciples to love one another just as he loved them.
To be his disciples we are charged to do the same.  We showed that love
during our South Oakland Shelter week when 92 volunteers came forth once
again to welcome the homeless into our church home.

The volunteer sign-up board gradually filled up with the names of drivers,
dinner hosts, overnight hosts and cleaning crews.  This year our volunteers
clocked in 771.2 hours of service.  Everyone’s service was important, and
Mary Margaret Bair was especially helpful as she assigned our guests to their
drivers and then called the drivers each evening to let them know what time
to come in the morning.

We served thirty-one guests this year, including a six-month-old boy and a
two-year-old girl.  Of course, those two captured the hearts of everyone.
Janet Ernst gave both of them a quilt from the Botsford [Hospital] "Quilts for
Kids" group.  Little Shannon’s eyes really lit up when she received her purple
quilt— that is her favorite color.

All of the guests enjoyed going through the baskets of personal items,
(shampoos, lotions, razors, and soaps) donated by the Haiti group.

They also appreciated the toothbrushes and toothpaste (including some for
sensitive teeth) donated by my dentist, Dr. Russell Bowman of Huntington
Woods.  And, as usual, we had many compliments on the wonderful food
served by our St. David’s family.  We have so many good cooks at St.
David's!

After supper our guests relaxed around the TV, played board games and
cards, played ball outside, or found a quiet place to be alone to read or rest.
All in all, it was a very pleasant week.

As they left, several guests thanked us again and said that they enjoyed
their stay with us.

Thank you everyone who helped in some way to make their lives a little
brighter for their week with us.  If you did not volunteer this year, please
consider it for next year.  Our week is
April 27 – May 4, 2008.  Come and
show your love for our Lord by serving his people.
