Writing for the summer issue of a parish
newsletter in the Great Lakes State leaves
wide open the opportunity to use nautical
jargon as we set sail for the more leisurely
journey in our annual cycle.
While summer will bring its moments of
recreation and ease, it will not be without
some serious consideration of what we
might think of as ‘setting course.’ Indeed,
this is what your parish leadership will be
up to this summer as we seek to fine-tune
our mission and set priorities for our
resources now and into the future.
Answering fundamental questions like,
‘Who is the Lord calling St. David’s to be?’
and ‘What is God calling St. David’s to do?’
are absolutely invaluable to your ‘skippers’
as they seek to guide us along the path the Lord has set for us in 2008 and beyond.
A first step came on June 1 and 8 when parishioners were asked to jot down an
answer to the following question and place it in the offering plate: “Please write down
a word or phrase that best describes the present and future ministry of St. David’s.”
Listed below are the responses that were received:
• Warmth-people are warm
• Wonderful
• Love, service
• Warm and charitable
• Prayerful families and individuals
• Present-community oriented, Future-diverse
• “God Within Us” (me!)
• Service, caring for others
• A most friendly place to come worship and give thanks for my many blessings
• To live and preach the Word of God at all times
• Family, youth, Bible-based sermons, fellowship/friendships
• Family, Family of the whole world
• Love and friendship. Things for our Youth to be involved.
• Loving, giving, serving, caring, community
• Outreach
• Love and caring for souls through fellowship
• We shall be known for what we do for others in Christ’s name
• Love God and do what you will!
• Very Good
• Hopefully a larger congregation and gospel music
• To stay as Episcopalians not Catholics and not as Baptists. To help the poor
and minister to the sick but also to keep up the buildings & grounds.
• Caring
• Optimistic
• Welcoming
• Caring
• Let our Light shine
• Spirituality - Love
• Wunderbar!!
• Caring for others - here and elsewhere.
• Promising
• Outreach to Seniors & needy & homebound parishioners
• reaching out to the un-churched
• sharing
• Caring and Loving family
• A place where God is worshipped; the oneness we share in Christ is shown
through community, confession and contribution; St. David’s equips its
members as witnesses who can communicate what they believe, why they
believe, and who they believe.
From here, the Vestry will also consider a final report from the June 29 Vestry
Visioning Sunday.
In the months ahead we hope to come up with some suggested mission statements
for the parish to consider. And we also hope to establish a foundation upon which to
build a strategic plan. We are a parish ‘on the grow’ and managing this growth is a
call we are taking seriously.
Please pray for your leadership this summer. Yes, we are taking vacation (there is no
vestry meeting in July), however that doesn’t mean we’re any less conscious of the
work the Lord is calling us to do. It is a reflection of the work the Lord has called the
entire parish to do.
Thank you for prayerful support as we look to even more ‘smooth sailing’ for St.
David’s!
