May 2008

As you read this, we are nearing the end of the great fifty days of Easter.
From the joyful “Hosannas” of Palm Sunday, to the plaintive unaccompanied
hymns of Good Friday, to the full-throated “Alleluias” of Easter, I think we
can justly be proud of our congregation and choirs. I am very thankful to all
for their devoted service. We were also graced with the presence of several
very talented guest musicians in our Holy Week worship.

You may have noticed that our Chancel and Handbell Choirs are sporting a
classical Anglican look. In fact, the new vestments worn by choir members
say something very special about the members’ commitments to ministry.
The red cassocks mimic the cassocks worn, often daily, by clergy in both the
Western and Eastern churches. Our color choice references the practice of
English cathedral choirs, who wear cassocks in hues ranging from blue to
brown. The pure white surplices signify baptism and are a different version of
the albs worn by our clergy, LEMS, and acolytes.

On the subject of commitment, I am grateful for the hearty singing coming
from the pews. If you enjoy singing, why not do so in one of our choirs? If
you’re generally interested in music, why not help ring our lovely handbells?
Each of our musical groups has a different “flavor” that may suit you
perfectly, and they all provide an opportunity for fellowship and learning.
Ability can be developed, but availability is crucial.  If you are interested at any
time, feel free to speak with me or with any of the choir members.

We also should express a heartfelt thanks to Mary Brown for her many years
of musical service. On the afternoon of June 8th, after the Parish Picnic, the
annual Youth Choir concert will take place. We will do well to call it a “Young
Adults” concert, for it celebrates the growing musical gifts of our younger
members, including those who are away at college and return for this event.
We will especially recognize Mary’s devotion to these talented youths. Even if
you have not been involved before, if you are a young adult and sing or play
an instrument, please consider joining in this concert. We will be happy to
include you.

Peace,
Chris
