Outreach - Haiti Outreach Mission
|
Background
This outreach program, began in 1998, is dedicated to
helping the people and children of Mirebalais, Haiti - a
mountain town approximately 50 miles from
Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
St. David's, along with the other HOM members
(Catholic, Episcopal, and Baptist churches), provides
health care, education support, and other services
with our partner churches in Mirebalais - St. Louis
Catholic and St. Pierre Episcopal.
Our mission team consists of doctors, dentists,
nurses, and lay people from HOM member churches as
well as doctors and medical students from
Port-au-Prince. We visit Mirebalais once each year.
Contact the church office for more details or visit the
HOM web site: www.haitioutreachmission.org.
Donations to support this mission work are always
welcomed.

2007 Mission Trip Report - May 4th to May 11th
Background:
This mission’s goal is to provide humanitarian and medical support to the
people of Mirebalais, Haiti, in conjunction with our partner Mirebalais
churches: St. Pierre Episcopal Church and St. Louis Catholic Church, in an
effort to improve their medical and socio-economic quality of life. Our
programs include medical support, education sponsorship, construction
assistance, and humanitarian needs.
Our efforts are concentrated on, but not limited to, the children of the
community as we believe the future growth and prosperity of Haiti depends
upon them.
St David’s, one of the three founding churches, will once again be
represented on the annual mission by Joan Elkins and Kathy Graham.
2007 Report:
Another successful trip was made by 40 members of the Haiti Outreach
Mission. We were able to take the mountain road from Port au Prince to
Mirebalais as it is now widened to two lanes. It remains unpaved, but is
much safer and work continues to finish the road.
Our first patient arrived at the clinic Sunday afternoon as we were setting
up the pharmacy and examination rooms. She was a 14 year old who had
recently been diagnosed with malaria. She was treated both Sunday and
Monday with IV fluids and an antibiotic to correct her dehydration as she
was nauseated and not able to eat.
From Monday through Thursday, 1970 patients were seen in the clinic.
Each adult was given a supply of vitamins, antacids, and pain medications
thanks to the generosity of all the donors throughout the Detroit area. In
addition, patients were provided with medication for infections, diabetes,
high blood pressure, and abdominal concerns. The children were provided
with vitamins, formula, and needed antibiotics, pain medications, and
treatment for cough and colds.
At four different schools, 1400 children were given fluoride treatments,
toothbrushes, toothpaste, bracelets and parasite medication. A number of
the schoolchildren were screened at the schools, and then treated at the
clinic for ringworm, scabies, and other health problems. It was a busy
week, and thanks to ongoing support, the clinic remains open with staffing
provided by a full-time doctor and a part-time dentist.
Thank you for all your contributions and your prayers.
